LIFT Team 2009

We arrived in George on Sunday 11th October to be greeted by old friends from OAM. We were taken straight to the missions new head quarters at Makani, sitiuated on woodlands over looking the stunning Outinique mountains. Shortly after settling in to our new home ,we started the trip off in true OAM style with a trip to the beach at Vic bay.
Monday morning came early with the alarms set for 6.30, and as with all teams we prayed together and commited the project to the Lord as we did every morning, these were great times for the team over the trip as we seeked the Lords will for our lives and the project ahead. We arrived at the project on the site of Parkdene Baptist Church, this was a great moment for us all as many of the team had worked at Parkdene before with OAM and were eager to continue with the work that God has been doing there. Parkdene is a Town ship in George which has a great need for housing. Our team from Northern Ireland were there to build two houses on the site of Parkdene Baptist church which would house families linked with the church who were in the most need. Driving through Parkdene and seeing the poverty all around and the conditions that many people lived in really encouraged us to push on and get the houses finished as quickly as possible to bless the families who were waiting for a safe home.

The building we were constructing was two story with two houses, one downstairs and one upstairs. It was a steel frame construction cladded with a fibre cement board and painted. Inside the houses were two bedroom with a kitchen and a bathroom. We fitted the houses out with lights, electrical points and hot water which is very rare for that area. These would be houses that the familys and the local community could be proud of.

The team set out over the course of the trip to construct the houses and leave them at a level that they were ready to be painted and handed over. Due to the very tight time scale the team pushed hard to complete the project before leaving. The team was made up of four lads from Northern Ireland, two builders, an electrician, and a welder. We worked with Brian McCormick from OAM who will be putting the finishing touches to the building after we leave. A highlight to any project with OAM is having the opportunity to work along side the local people and serve the Lord together. Our team was working alongside three local men and also the Pastor of the Baptist church, this was a great opportunity to experience some of the local culture and build new friendships in a new environment.

SACK

TEAM SACKThurs 13th

The whole team felt it was a bit unreal that this was the last day of Team SACK! We did some more “roll up sports” in the morning in the Blanco Township. We split into 3 groups and walked through the township chatting to people and finding kids to bring together for some games. I think a lot of the Team were quite shocked by the conditions and the little that the kids had. Even though we were only there for a short while we brought smiles to the kids faces and felt we had made a difference, even if it was small.

Later we heard that  a girl who had seen us painting the house in Blanco accepted Jesus when the Portstewart Baptist Team asked her if she’d like prayer, which was a real encouragement. We ended the day with Sports Academy and some warm goodbyes to the kids we all had loved getting to know.

What a trip!

Tuesday tested the stamina of the Team. First stop was in Blanco Township, a house renovation for an old lady unable to walk. The Team pulled together and painted the inside of the house, and bonded with the neighbours.

Kids Stop took over our afternoon! Noah’s Ark captivated the audience for the most part, while Neish and Lauren turned the kids into wild animals after. The kids were sad to see us go :-(

PS: Anti-sport was there in spirit!

The Team spent two days in Blanco painting an house, preparing a vegetable garden at Zenzele (a women’s self help project based in Blanco), praying for sick people and witnessing – it was a privilege to be of help and to witness poor people confess Christ as Lord & Saviour.

“Let the little children come to me and do not stop them…” These are words spoken by Jesus and spending a morning at a field in Thembalethu after picking up garbage certainly made the words come alive for us. The children were so accepting of our presence and joined in playing football, skipping, tag of war etc. It was a blessing to be used of God to bring a time of joy for them away from the monotony & poverty that is their everyday life.

Joining Pastor Amos’ church for Sunday worship left us hungry for more. The people expressed their love, worship & honour of God with   passion. It was both ministered to challenge us.

The Team had a day of rest and went for a game drive. It was a refreshing day for all and even as we took pleasure in the scenery &joyed in seeing the animals, we were all reminded of how awesome God is and His creation is a powerful witness to His greatness.

OAM Sports AcademyMonday

Today was def the most enjoyable morning for me so far. The Team headed to George hospital to walk around the kids wards, spending sometime with them. I asked a lady (Sharmane) if I could pray for her and her son (Carlton). Once I did, she was very appreciative, saying it was what she had been waiting for someone to pray for her!! It was an amazing experience with other stories like that.

On the way home Pierre treated the Team to Oreo Mc Flurrys…however…being from Norther Ireland it was not quite enough from the golden arches and a few sneaky trips to the counter for burgers and chips were made.

For the afternoon the OAM Sports Academy came to Makani for a fun day – many games, water ball wars and total soakings later – I think the whole Team felt a lot more bonded with the kids…although there was definitely cheating going on??!!!

Pierre spoke to us after dinner challenging us to let go of our past and more to grab our destiny and future! We all have so much potential for Gods work!!

Tuesday

WOW!! The toughest day mentally for sure! We went to a house in Blanco where an old lady lived! We were painting it. However, the conditions she lives in are horrific! Once we had removed mice, mice nests and babies the dirt and smell were still too overpowering it was tough going! However, the team stepped up…and everyone was so proud of each other as we worked together and did our best for that lady. It put a smile on her face! She also had a two month old puppies which were amazing and added a welcome distraction! God basically reminded us all how blessed we all are at home – and how it is a challenge we must serve those less fortunate!

Straight from the house, feeling rather dirty we went to Kids Stop! Here we told the story of Noah’s Ark with drama added in! We played games and had fun interacting with the kids!

Home and all straight to the showers!! Everyone felt quite emotionally and physically tired.

Wayne spoke to us and challenged each of us to fulfill our purpose for God. Everyone seemed to be really challenged to get sorted out at home and become more focused on God an serving Him.

Another super day – each brings a new challenge of its own. This is an amazing experience which I am very grateful for!

Monday 10th August

We visited the paediatrics ward in George Hospital. Cuddly teddies accompanied us to see the kids, while we spent time just chilling with them and their parents. The morning was challenging in many ways, and spending time with the kids prompted ideas about opportunities to share God’s love at home.

On the road back to base camp, we stumbled across the beautiful Golden Acres and devoured burgers and Oreo McFlurrys :-)

The afternoon consisted of fun times with the Sports Academy kids at base camp. Niall shared his testimony with the entire group who were stuffed with milkshakes and cookies! Some dodgy moves were being racked out in the living room, followed by some competitive team action out in the garden, led by Niall & Becs. The battlefield was brutal at times, with some stunning performances, finished off with a water bombing session to cool down.

Overall a great day had by all, bat the sick notes!

Kids StopThe Journey.

A very tired Team SACK arrived in George on a bus driven by Pierre (thanks!) – 30 hours of travelling from Belfast via Dubai for some, finished in style when we got to see the new OAM premises – amazing! We didn’t get to fully appreciate it until daylight, but we were a little apprehensive thanks to Pierre’s stories about snakes and spiders that had been found!

The First Day.

So, now that the 12 members of the Team were well-slept it was straight to work in the garden. Surprisingly it was really hot so we were loving being outside and we did find a massive spider, which had crawled out of a carpet and up Phil’s arm before he noticed it!

It was great to spend time as a Team & getting to know our surroundings and the rest of the OAM staff.

From that we went to Sports Academy – it was football day so there were no girls at Sports Academy… we still managed with the 8 girls in the team!

Wayne definitely runs the Academy very professionally and it was encouraging to see the respect they have for Wayne and each other as a team. They are an inspiration really. After some talking from us, it was time for the sports stars to show us their skills… in the funky Chicken!

The kids got really involved and then it was on to some football exercises and a game. A few brave girls joined in but since we have a Northern Ireland International Footballer there was no excuse for Rebecca not to join in!

Day 2: Painting & playing!

Day 2 began earlier than day 1 – Jenny had porridge for the first time ever so it was a big day! We had only 2 hours to paint a house in the Parkdene township – luckily it was only the outside! We met Pastor Bruce at the Baptist Church and he showed us what was to be done – the house was dark blue and we were slightly scared by the fact that the paint we had was very light!

Luckily the Team were up for the challenge and we completed the job in less than 1.5hours! The owners of the house were so pleased and it was fantastic to be able to bless them in such a simple way but in a way that was incredibly important to them.

After a quick charge and a peanut butter sandwich it was off to Kids Stop drop in centre in Thembalethu for the afternoon.  We tried out our new drama about Zacchaeus, which needs a bit of refining, but it went well! The kids enjoyed a massive game of football and there was make-up for the girls – Lauren did some fantastic face painting. The Team got so much out of the trip to Kids Stop as we got to really engage with the kids and show God’s love in a real practical way.

It’s hard to believe our time in South Africa is drawing to a close. We’ve had many ups and downs as a team, but I have seen each team member flourish and grow in ways that can only be attributed our God, the Faithful One. It’s been a busy week! On Monday and Tuesday, we worked at KidStop,  which is a Youth for Christ ministry run in one of the townships. They provide a safe haven for street children with a school program in the morning and a HUGE afterschool program where as many as 100 kids come to eat soup and hear about God.  These children have heartbreaking stories of families torn apart by alcohol, drugs, and poverty. KidStop’s desire is to show another way of life, to encourage them that they can break the destructive cycles of their parents, but only through the power of Christ. Our team washed dishes, cleaned, served food and did crafts with ALL 100 kids! It was a little crazy, but it was so much fun. These children are truly grateful for what they receive, which is a humbling testimony for us. As we spoke with the KidStop staff we were encouraged just to love on the kids. They have no one to simply give them time. So we sang, we danced, we let them play with our hair, we looked like fools the whole time and it was worth it!

Wednesday and Thursday were dedicated to the Blanco Creche (Preschool). The parents pay based on how much money they make, and the children who are too poor do not pay at all, but are funded by the community. We were able to help the director with some administrative tasks and clean out and sort a cabinet of donations. Some of it was a little tedious, as we spent one afternoon attempting to put all the puzzles together to ascertain if any pieces were missing. The pieces were all mixed up, so you can imagine our cries to God, “PLEASE let us find just ONE complete puzzle!” J In the end we got the cabinet sorted out and the complete puzzles in their own separate boxes. It’s always nice to be able to see the fruits of your labor.  The Creche is overworked and understaffed, but we finished our tasks quickly and we were able to once again just spend time with the kids. At the end of the day, the team was exhausted from singing, running, spinning around, and holding those beautiful babies, but of course it was worth it. We are sowing love into their lives, and even if they can’t yet understand it, our God speaks in love, and He was speaking through us.

Work like this with children is first of all humbling. When I pull a child into my lap and wrap my arms around her, I feel the love of God for her. As I start to pray, I feel the importance of her life and future, I sense the greatness of the plans her God has for her and it is astounding. As I pray for those great plans to be realized in her life, I see how small I am, how great our God is. In those moments I once again realize that I cannot change her future, I can only offer her to the Lord, who loves her more than I could ever dream. We are privileged to plant the seeds, and it is up to God to grow them.

Friday we began by visiting Zen Zele, a community based job-creation project in Blanco. The ladies there make crafts and sell them in order to make a living. After learning about the project and admiring the handiwork, we set off on a prayer walk through Blanco, stopping to pray in the homes of the Zen Zele ladies. It was a powerful morning as we simply followed God’s voice. At times we prayed for protection, at times we prayed blessings on the house, the land, the neighbors. One woman who saw us walking by came out of her house and asked us for prayer. It was fantastic to see God use us, humbling to hear and obey His voice. Friday afternoon we got to go surfing in the Indian Ocean! We were all a little nervous, except for Karen, but we had great instruction and the waves were perfect. In just a few short days we will be heading off to Cape Town for debriefing, and then catching that ridiculously long plane ride home. We are sad to go, but God has sparked new dreams in us all and I am anxious to see how He moves in our ministries at home. Many blessings to you all!

Today the team woke up and headed to the local township’s school.  At the  Blanco School (Kretsenhoop: grades 1-9) we presented various topics in partnerships to the classes such as thanksgiving, sports and games, and a discrimination lesson. After rotating through the classes we played with the kids and traveled in the cambis to an after school township program where the kids are fed and told bible stories. We acted out three stories, sang songs, listened to them sing, and taught games. The boys were busy wresteling while the girls were playing hair salon. After lunch and blanket distribution we said goodbye and returned to the base.

St Andrews leaving early in the morning.

St Andrews leaving early in the morning.

After a last full day of ministry we look foreward to leaving early tomorrow morning for de-brief in Cape Town. We are currently enjoying our nightly ritual around the fire with dinner, coloring books, cards, and laughter. The girls and boys are in a mini war over our mythical girl kingdom with our butler Alfred behind our door, but other than that, team spirit is running high!
